William Mackenzie was born in Queen Street, Glasgow, on 29 April 1791, the son of James Mackenzie, a muslin manufacturer. He was educated at Glasgow Grammar School and Glasgow University where he initially studied divinity with the intention of becoming a minister of the Church of Scotland.
